What has liberal arts given you? (Discussion)

acrosstheuniverse saidWed, 23 Jul 2008 20:02:41 -0000 ( Link )

I know there are probably a few LearnHubbers here with Liberal Arts degrees, or those who have taken liberal arts in the past.

I’m curious to know, what have you learned from your liberal arts experiences? Have you found that this has helped you in your career or achieve things you’d like to accomplish?

What have you taken and how has it gotten you to where you are now?

My Liberal arts education gave me the opportunity to study classes I was truly interested in, and so unlike high school, I became engaged in both my studies and my school, which resulted in me doing better in school then ever before.

Also, not only have my critical reading, writing, public speaking, and debating skills improved, but my degree itself (Contemporary Studies) gives me an opportunity to speak during interviews a lot of people don’t have.

My liberal arts degree comes from a newer line of thinking that promotes interdisciplinary education, but since most people don’t recognize the title (unlike an engineering, or business degree), I always get asked about my degree and get the opportunity to go in depth about what my schooling was like and all it’s positive effects,

The liberal arts has given me the capacity to appreciate and understand the world around me. I find that many people in the liberal arts may or may not have strong opinions, but they usually also have open minds. Because there is no definitive answer in the arts like there usually is in math, I find that you have to be much more aware and concerned with the possibility of biases. The arts requires you to be a sort of detective in filtering out good and bad information, as well as having the ability to back up your arguments with reasonable evidence.
