Schools with Liberal Arts Programs

Liberal Arts: Where to learn?

Many universities have thriving liberal arts programs, since there is so much flexibility in the interests of students. However, with so many choices, how can you tell which school is great for which courses and for which programs?

Here I'll be profiling a few universities and colleges from the United States and Canada who offer Liberal Arts and talk a little bit about what each school has to offer.

At Acadia, we teach you to question. Our faculty members will challenge you to think critically. To debate and engage. And to enjoy intellectually challenging academic programs. Our small classes provide a personalized learning atmosphere that fosters student success.

Acadia is nationally and internationally recognized as a centre of research excellence. Our faculty's dual commitment to instill a love of learning and to generate new knowledge provides our students with unique partnerships with faculty, both to do research and to communicate and connect that research to the community.

The Faculty of Art's first sentence says it all and brings the Liberal Arts connect very close. Thinking critically is what Acadia is all about. In the Liberal Arts stream, it is a great motivator to know that the courses you may take here are intellectually stimulating as well as challenging. Acadia exemplifies a thriving liberal arts faculty through its small class sizes. The whole idea behind liberal arts is the exchange of ideas being able to take place, and with a better ratio of profs to students, ideas are able to flow freely.

Here are some of the Liberal Arts courses that Acadia currently offers:
  • Canadian Studies
  • Classics
  • Comparative Religion
  • Economics
  • English
  • History
  • Languages and Literatures
  • School of Music
  • Philosophy
  • Political Science
  • Sociology
  • Theatre Studies
  • Women's Studies

Not only does Minnesota Morris have a solid roster of Liberal Arts credits, courses and majors, it even has a major within the Division of the Social Sciences called Liberal Arts for the Human Services. Here's a description of what it entails:

Objectives

This program's main objectives are to provide a firm liberal arts basis for understanding individual human behavior in its social context, provide the liberal arts foundation for professional work in baccalaureate-level human services occupations, and prepare students for graduate work in the human services professions.

Coursework

Students who major in Liberal Arts for the Human Services select courses from a broad range of disciplines including anthropology, sociology, psychology, management, economics, history, political science, speech communication, and wellness/sports science.

In addition, many courses in this major participate in UMM's Service Learning program. As part of their coursework, students may conduct life history interviews with farmers who participate in the Pride of the Prairie local foods program, assist with domestic violence/sexual assault prevention and education efforts through Someplace Safe, or mentor girls in the juvenile justice system who lives at Heartland Girls' Ranch. Faculty at UMM develop new projects like these each semester.

Minnesota Morris' ability to adapt its course offerings to cater to what is up and coming in our world today is something very worth while. Their arts program is renown and the example of this new major shows a lot onto their ability to provide workable majors that really prepare their students for the working world.
